Additions to the Adult Writers' List

St. Mary's Messenger is a Catholic magazine for ages 7-12. The 32-page print magazine is published quarterly. You don't have to be Catholic to share your work with them. Their website says,"Not every piece needs to be religious...anything interesting to kids will interest us." This is a paying market. Check here for submission guidelines.

I'm excited that Kris Weipert, Chief Editor of St. Mary's Messenger, has provided us additional insights into this magazine through an interview for this issue of Writing for Children's Magazines. Check it out here.

Rookie is an online magazine of writing, photography, and other forms of artwork by and for teenagers (and anybody else who's interested). They mostly want submissions from teenagers, but are also happy to consider work by adults. Each month has a theme. Submission guidelines are here. This is a paying market.

• If you qualify as an expert in some aspect of science, the arts, or the humanities, you might want to consider writing for Imagine magazine. See below.

Additions to the Young Writers' List

Tunnel is an online magazine that publishes art, writing, music, and misc. from young people, specifically high schoolers, but they will consider others. They usually feature two pieces a week, on Mondays and Thursdays. Submission guidelines are here. This is a non-paying market.

Imagine magazine, published five times a year in both print and digital form, is for gifted students in grades 7-12. The magazine includes articles about science, art, and the humanties, career profiles, student-written articles about competitions and summer programs, advice for college planning, brain teasers, college reviews, and student creative work. The writers are both students who have participated in exciting academic programs and experts in the sciences, arts, and humanities. Submission guidelines are here. Themes for the 2016-2017 year are on the same page.

Rookie. See above.

Volunteer Editorial Positions

My Light, an online Catholic children's publication, has been inactive for a while and is hoping to gear back up. They are looking for volunteers to help with some of the editorial work. If you're interested, check details here.

Contests

Reminder that the deadline for the Pockets Annual Fiction Contest is August 15.

This and That

Crawl Space Journal is currently closed to submissions but will reopen soon for Fall issue submissions.

Encounter's publisher, Standard Publishing, has been purchased by David C. Cook and the magazine is not currently accepting submissions.

Kids' Imagination Train is closed to submissions. They hope to re-open at the end of August.

Spigot Science is currently not accepting submissions.

Yarn submissions will re-open for poetry, fiction, and essays, starting September 15.

Closed List

• I've placed Knowonder on the 'closed' list since they have not been accepting submissions for short stories for more than a year and a half. (Their open submissions are only for books.)

• I also put Super Teacher Worksheets on the 'closed' list, because for several years now, they have only been open to submissions from their 'regular' contributors.
