By-line Opportunity
I enjoyed reading Marty Crisp's piece so much this month that I thought it would
be fun for us to write a sequel to it. So put on your creative thinking caps and send me your own completed sentence
for "You know you're a children's writer when...." I'll choose the best and publish them in
a future issue of Writing for Children's Magazines. If yours is selected, I'll include your name as
the contributor for your line. Email your submissions to
evelyn.christensen@gmail.com.
New Magazines
• The National Wildlife Federation, publisher of the popular Ranger Rick magazine, has a brand new
magazine for younger children, ages 4-7, called
Ranger Rick Jr. It
debuted with the December issue and has 36 pages of advertising-free animal content.
Lori Collins is the editor of Ranger Rick Jr. Check here for
submission information.
• Silver Pen, publisher of the former Kids'Magination ezine, is planning a new publication for older readers called
Youth Imagination. This online magazine will be
a paying market.
Their website says,"We are open for submissions, and are particularly interested in creative fiction by teens, but will also
accept YA stories by adult authors." Check
here for submission guidelines.
Re-launch
Aletheia Magazine is being re-launched
in both digital and print format. According to their website this is "a unique publication dedicated to
providing inspiration and edification to Christian teens through literary and artistic expression/reflection."
Aletheia originally launched in the spring of 2011. At that time it included mostly material submitted
by teens. For the relaunch, the focus is still a magazine for teens, but the content will be from more
experienced, adult writers.
They are interested in short stories (300-3000 words) and articles (500-2000 words) for which they pay
$0.02 per word.
Short stories should speak to virtue, truth, or goodness in some way:
• Fantasy
• Fables/Myths
• Historical Fiction (other than Biblical fiction)
• Stories that are mysterious and filled with wonder
Articles:
Literature, literary review, art, art history, Classical themes, creativity, Glorifying God through
creativity, etc.
They are NOT interested in stories/articles about Christianity itself, teens coming to Christ, Bible stories, or
stories that overtly tell the "moral of the story."
Christian teens may submit artwork and poetry. (Non-paying, but a free digital copy of the magazine will be given.)
Check their website for submission guidelines:
www.aletheiamag.com/submissions.html.
Magazines Ceasing Publication
• The National Wildlife Federation has discontinued their publication of Big Backyard and Wild Animal Baby.
They've incorporated the best features of both into their new magazine Ranger Rick Jr.
• Kids'Magination ezine published its last issue December 2012. Previously published stories will remain
on the site still available for reading. Silver Pen, its publisher, believes its
new ezine Youth Imagination will reach a broader audience and better achieve its goal of helping young writers.
Additions to the Adult Writers' List
• Frodo's Notebook
was already listed in the Young Writer's section, but I discovered they also are
interested in some adult submissions. They're a non-paying market. Submission guidelines are
here.
• As I was adding Ranger Rick Jr. to the list I discovered that I had never added
Ranger Rick,
so it is also now on the list.
Submission
information is the same as for Ranger Rick Jr.
New Theme Lists
The three magazines published in Bluffton, OH -- Fun for Kidz, Hopscotch, and Boys' Quest --
all have new themes listed. See
www.funforkidzmagazines.com/writers.
Updated Website Links
Spellbound has released their first issue and now has new links for their
website and
submission guidelines.
Reminder
Beginning with this January 2013 issue, Writing for Children's Magazines will be published bi-monthly instead of
monthly. The next issue will therefore be March. If you're wanting a reminder to let you know when a new
issue is posted, I encourage you to make use of the free helpful resource
http://www.changedetection.com. If you sign up,
they'll send you an email letting you know when a change has been made on the Writing for Children's Magazines homepage.
